Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is an organization of college educated women committed to constructive development of its members, and to public service with a primary focus on the black community.

Expanded Mission

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a sisterhood of college-educated women committed to public service. A Delta is therefore one who affirms, contributes, and works actively to achieve the organization of public service.

Deltas are committed to being sisters. Delta must enlighten, encourage, comfort and “bear one another’s burdens.” The Delta Meditation states it very clear “… In Delta Sigma Theta the greatest of these is love.”

Our members are predominantly Black, heirs to a history of oppression in a land that brought their African forbearers here in chains and whose history of legal segregation and denial of opportunity is a matter of record. As Deltas, it is important to carry in each successive generation a historic memory of a people’s struggle and survival.

Deltas are women who identify with women ideas. Having lived on the front line of Black issues, our history as Black Women has evolved simultaneously with the emancipation of slaves and the struggle for civil rights. We advance; therefore, in the spirit of our Delta Oath …we struggle with the double handicap for race and sex.

Suffrage March in Washington DC

We are a college movement with an academic base. We were founded in a college by college woman, for college women. From the beginning, we have required high scholastic achievement for membership. Therefore, we are most truly in touch with our identity when we express respect for the ancient and timely academic values of scholarship:

High intellectual achievement

  • High scholastic attainment
  • Research and contemplative life of the scholar
  • Respect for the disciplined scholarly knowledge, methods of scientific inquiry and academic and scholarly basis for problem solving
  • The rule of reason
  • Honor to those who teach, who study, and who continue to contribute to the world’s store of knowledge

The organizational thrust is indeed public service.

We express our values in building community projects for the public good.
